The 160mm APO FL is the lighter, faster cousin to the 160mm ED. Retaining a generous aperture, superior optics, precision FeatherTouch focuser, there is nothing quite like it!
TEC 160mm APO Fluorite Refractor
The TEC 160mm APO ED is an excellent choice for the astrophotographer. Beautifully clear, high contrast and sharp oil spaced optics are only improved by the use of Calcium Fluorite internal optics and BBar high efficiency coatings on the outer surfaces. Despite the huge 6.2 inches of aperture, the 160mm FL is even more portable than the ED model at only 24 pounds and 39.4 inches.
Paired with awesome optics, is the 3.5" rotating Feather Touch focuser. Widely known and highly popular among both observing and imaging astronomers for precision and quality performance. The 3545 focuser was a collaborative effort between TEC and Starlight Instruments with a specialized 9:1 focus reduction and features a coarse and fine focus adjustment. A rach and pinion focuser, Starlight adjusts each assembly to minimize backlash. A 2" collet style eyepiece holder has been included to securely hold your eyepieces in place. The 3545 also has a 10 pound load capacity to accomodate your imaging and viewing equipment.
TEC 160mm Features...
- Oiled triplet design for ultra efficient use of light combined with CaF2 lens elements and BBar coatings on all outer surfaces.
- Retractable dew shield for ultra portability.
- Round edged baffles reduce turbulence.
- Clam shell with hex key closure and carry handle. Readily adaptable to standard dovetail adpaters.
- 2" Rotating Collet style Feather Touch focuser with a 10pound capacity!
- All telescope components are made and assembled in the USA.
Telescope Engineering Company was started in 1994 as an optical subcontracting company and after 6 years, many Maksutov, zero-expansion Sitall LZOS blanks, and several mammoth optical projects including a 1.4M system for an observatory the began to hone their expertise in on refractor systems.
TEC Optical Expertise and Professional Quality Refractors
Running their production in Golden, Colorado, TEC is operated by an adept team of optical engineers. Special attention is paid to every detail of their telescope design and every component is assembled and made in the USA.
Warranty Information: All TEC product carries a lifetime warranty! If TEC made it or if it came with your telescope, then TEC will guarantee that it is free from defect or fault under normal use. The warranty is also fully transferrable to all future owners.
Important Note: TEC produces all of their telescopes in very closely controlled batches which allows them to maintain a extreme level of quality control. Because they work on one model at a time and each run is done in predetermined quantities, they are able to accurately schedule deliveries. It is highly encouraged that customers put in their order as early as possible as runs often sell out and waiting to place an order could result in a longer waiting period. A 20% deposit is required for the 160mm however the deposit is only required when TEC tells OPT your optics are ready to be installed in a telescope. We will contact you at that time to finalize the order.

- Awesome Review by Headshot
1= Houston, We Have a Problem & 5= It's Out of This World
The fit and finish of the OTA are impeccable. The paint job is attractive, but not gaudy, and seems to be very durable; the focuser is typical FeatherTouch pure silk that would put a Swiss watch to shame; the mounting rings are a joy to use due to their unusual, but simple design; and the dust cap is substantial, thankfully not a cheap fiberglass or cardboard slip-on. Considering the price of this telescope, however, all this must be secondary to its performance.
I have been observing for over fifty years, sometimes using professional grade equipment, and have been stunned by the views through the 160 FL. A view of Jupiter through this telescope equipped with a Leica Zoom ASPH eyepiece and extender was so clear and crisp that it felt like I was looking out the porthole of an approaching starship. The disks of the Galilean satellites were particularly sharp and well-defined. A two-day old moon seemed like a new alien world to me due to the rich details and high contrast this telescope provided. A quick view of Venus nearly blinded me, but yielded no indication of color fringing.
The bottom line for me is that the TEC 160 FL is probably the last telescope I will purchase.
