Vixen Great Polaris Deluxe (GP-D2) Equatorial Mount Starbook-S and HAL-130 Tripod
Are you ready? Then let's talk about the Vixen GPD2 Equatorial Mount ...
This top-of-the-line mount can handle almost twice the weight of the Vixen GPD2 mount because of higher precision machining and the use of more ridged materials, while keeping the GP2's compact appearance. Periodic motion is abated by the use of durable steel on both axis and the precise R.A. worm gear -- machined to twice the accuracy found on the capable Vixen GPD2 mount. Dual altitude adjustment knobs ease the way to pointing heavier telescopes toward the north celestial pole. Bubble-level, fine adjustment knobs for altitude/azimuth, illuminated polar axis finder and two counterweights (3.7kg & 1.9kg) are standard.
The GPD2 equatorial mount is the stronger and heftier of the GP mounts. With its solid steel R. A. and Declination axes and brass worm gears, this mount will hold up to years of heavy use. In order to assure accurate tracking for astrophotography the worm gears are especially machined to a very high precision that minimizes periodic error. The GPD2 Mount is equipped with a polar axis scope with a built in illuminator. The GPD2 holds almost 50% more weight than the GP2. Includes the STARBOOK S System for full GoTo capabilities.
This model of the latest Vixen Great Polaris mount includes the new Starbook S, a GoTo controller with built-in star chart that shows you exactly where the telescope is pointing and only displays "what’s up” right now. The included (and upgradeable) software contains a 22,000+ object database, giving the user an endless variety of objects to view. Choose from a variety of drop-down menus, including Stars, Planets, Messier, NGC and other famous objects. Each sub-menu only lists the objects that are available to be viewed at that time. This eliminates the frustration of other GOTO systems that don’t tell you the object is below the horizon until after you have selected it. With the Vixen Starbook S you will spend more time viewing and less time searching.
The package includes advanced encoder motors for accurate tracking, and an auto-guider port and PEC (periodic error correction) are both standard features. All of this makes the Vixen GPD2 with Starbook S the most affordable, quality astro-photographer’s mount available.
Words on the Vixen GPD2 Equatorial Mount, Starbook S Controller and HAL-130 Tripod Package...
"Follow the stars with one of the smartest values in a mount package. This package has the GPD2 mount that, once aligned to Polaris, will help keep the movement of the stars centered in your field of view. Vixen has been making versions of the GP mount almost since the inception of the company. It originally started out as the Polaris Mount, then evolved through refinements as the Great Polaris Mount and with further refinements now as the GPD2 Mount. As with all versions, the GPD2 incorporates the same care and precision that is evident in all Vixen products. This includes 100% inspection and testing on the drive gears of all mounts. You can rest assured that when you purchase a GPD2 mount it is going to work right out of the box. To give you added assurance when this mount is purchased through an authorized Vixen Optics dealer, your 5 year warranty is included." -- Mr. StarGuy

Not impressed. The main body of the mount seemed fairly solid but every knob and every screw had some play to it leaving me to feel very uneasy about the quality of the engineering. The power supply was made of incredibly cheap-appering plastic and fragile wiring with nowhere to attach it to the scope. All of the plastic covers on the motorized drive units were loose and fell off with minor impacts leaving exposed gears - The gears themselves felt loose and poorly meshed. Starbook seems like a very user-friendly product, but with no place to attach it to the mount when not in use it seems vulnerable to damage. I ended up returning the product very shortly after assembling it. |
