Coronado PST Personal Solar Telescope
Coronado has developed a series of telescopes as a result of the often asked question, "What is the best telescope to use with a Coronado filter?" While almost all refractors and most reflecting telescopes can be used with a Coronado H-alpha filter, no other telescope has been designed with all its optical aberrations and coatings optimized at H-Alpha. Most nighttime telescopes, when used at H-alpha, will not have the image contrast exhibited by a Coronado SolarMax nor the image quality. Most broadband coatings, used on such telescopes, will have reduced effectiveness at this wavelength and telescopes (particularly reflectors) not specifically designed for solar viewing, will exhibit unnecessary scattering and spurious light transmission. All of the Coronado scopes, even the PST, have been designed with this one wavelength of light in mind and will increase contrast and give you a darker background for viewing and imaging.

Excellent Value!
I gotta be honest....The Coronado PST is a fantastic little H-Alpha scope! Frankly, for $500, I was shocked with how good it performs for me on a daily basis. I even manage to get decent quality photos with my Nikon Coolpix S600 pocket camera!
I couldn't be happier with this product!
The surface details can be seen very well, Solar Prominences show up remarkably well through this scope, and the price is incredible! If you've always wanted to get into H-Alpha & Solar viewing, you have to do yourself a favor and get one of these! : |

Coronado PST
I have greatly enjoyed my Coronado PST for several years now and have always been very satisfied with the purchase. I would certainly enjoy delving deeper into this with a more expensive scope, but for the relatively low price of the PST you can't go wrong here. I feel it will meet all reasonable expectations. I did add the SolorMax 40 and I enjoy the enhanced views. The addition of the SolarMax however, is not at all necessary to the enjoyment of the PST. What the PST provides you with for $500 is awesome. The addition of the SolarMax 40 is not at all necessary to having a great time with the PST. It will provide more surface detail as advertised, but I would suggest to try one on a PST first and see if you personally find it worthwhile. I'm sure on the higher level scopes the SolarMax provides a more dramatic difference. Coronado PST though, great little scope for the price. |

Great starter H-alpha telescope
I bought my Coronado PST about three months ago after looking through my friends PST telescope. I had never looked at the sun in H-alpha before (only in white light through some Baader solar film and was able to see two large prominences and a number of smaller ones. So I decided to take the plunge and buy a PST for myself.
My first day out with the PST was a good day for viewing, as there was quite a bit of solar activity. There was a very big prominence around 4 o'clock and I could make out a little bit of detail within this large prominence. I was able to see some surface detail, though there was not a tremendous amount of surface detail. I am planning on getting the second PSM40 filter soon, as this is supposed to provide a huge amount of surface detail, even through the little PST. But I will have to save up for that!
Overall I am happy with my purchase of the PS... |
