Great kids telescope
When writing this review, I kept in mind the fact that this is a $50 telescope. The four and a half star rating is a comparison against other telescopes I have seen in this price range.
When I saw this telescope I thought it would be perfect for my son who likes to come out and observe with me. When I am busy observing or imaging, I usually hand him some binoculars. Yet binos in this range usually do not have enough light gathering, or the ability to change magnifications. So the Firstscope seemed like a great option for a light weight, easy to use telescope he could use when I was tied up.
I received the telescope about three weeks ago and took it out a few nights later. I ran it through its paces and was surprised by the good image quality (for a $49 telescope. It was very easy to use, the focuser was acceptable and the mount (propped on a solid table was pretty so... |

First Scope
This small telescope is a pleasure to use after making a few eyepiece subsitutions and adding a sighter. A 32mm, 25mm and 10mm plossl eyepieces from my kit makes viewing more plesureable. The 4mm that came with this scope was needed to get a clear view of Saturn and two of its moons. Views of the moon are good. Stars are focused and sharp right out of the box. Finding objects by sighting down the outside of the scope tube is tedious and would be frustrating for a real beginner but it can be done I recommend adding the optional sighter scope as a minimum to simplify the aiming of the scope. I mounted an inexpensive (under $10red LED reflex sighter normally used for a BB gun. After that, finding M13 in Hercules and a other objects by star hopping was easy. I have 3 telescopes of various sizes so I purchased this scope out of curiosity but the Celestron First Scope is quickly becoming one ... |

First scope first impressions
This telescope is a great bargin. It is very well constructed for an inexpensive telescope. It was already assembled and ready to use right out of the box except for one loose screw. I was able to see the rings of Saturn and the Orion nebula without any trouble. Its aperture is too small for any serious observing, but for the price I don't know of any other telescope which even come close.
The telescope has considerable coma at the edge of the field of view due to its extremely large field of view. The image is acceptable near the center of the field of view out to near the edge. The telescope accepts 1.25 inch eyepieces which is a big plus, but better eyepieces don't help the coma.
The only thing that kept me from giving a 5 star rating is that the two included eyepieces are not parfocal and the 4 mm eyepiece is difficult to remove from the telescope if fully inserted into... |
