Eyepieces & Barlows |
Do you want to learn more about telescope eyepieces? Then you've come
to the right place - OPT. Unlike other Internet sales sites, we're
here to teach you more about the products you're interested in and
help you decide what's right for you. An expensive eyepiece can't
turn a bad telescope into a good one,
but the right eyepiece in a good telescope can offer an extraordinary visual
experience. Telescope eyepieces come in a wide variety of designs which
serve many purposes from public outreach to breathtaking views of the
Cosmos! Let's take a look at few things to consider before choosing a telescope
eyepiece and basic eyepiece designs...
Why are there so many different eyepieces? The answer is magnifying
power. The magnifying power of any eyepiece is a simple equation
expressed in millimeters: divide the focal length of the telescope by
the focal
length of the eyepiece and your answer is the amount of magnification.
If you're interested in that factor alone, you might wish to take a
look at Choosing Telescope Eyepieces By Focal
Length. In this category you'll learn more about how to chose by
power alone!
When shopping for a telescope eyepiece, you'll encounter many terms used in Choosing Telescope Eyepieces By
Manufacturer Series. Knowing what they mean will help when
choosing an eyepiece! The first is eye relief (ER) - the distance your
eye must be
away from the eyepiece lens to achieve focus. For example, if you plan
on wearing eyeglasses you will need at least 15mm of eye relief to see
the entire field. Without glasses you want to avoid feeling like your
eye is crammed against
the eyepiece at higher powers. Apparent field of view (AFOV) is next.
Dictated by eyepiece design and expressed in degrees, the apparent
field of
view is the width of the field as seen through the eyepiece. For
example, two eyepieces with identical focal length will show more sky
with a larger AFOV in the same telescope. Other terms you may encounter
are distortion and curvature of field. A good quality eyepiece
provides a flat field of view and sharp images from edge to edge. Now
let's take a brief look at designs. Inside of every telescope
eyepiece are lenses. The basic 3-element design is best for small
telescopes and is known for good eye relief, average apparent field and
good, low-cost performance. The all purpose 4-element has a narrower
field of view,
yet excellent color correction and contrast. The affordable 4-element plossl
design increases field of view and image contrast. For expansive views,
5 to 6-element designs nearly double FOV over basic eyepieces, while
ultra-wides (consisting of 6 to 8-elements) deliver panoramic views and
extremely high quality images.
If you're looking for a beginner telescope eyepiece - or ready to get
