Celestron AstroMaster 70 AZ Telescope - 70mm Refractor on Alt-Azimuth Mount

If you're looking for a great dual-purpose telescope appropriate for both terrestrial and celestial viewing, then the Celestron AstroMaster Series is for you. Each AstroMaster model is capable of giving image correct views of land and sky. With its time tested durability and high quality optics at an affordable price, the Celestron Astro Master makes a great first telescope!

As a bonus, Celestron has included a nice selection of accessories for your new telescope with this purchase, which means you will be observing the same day you unpack the box. Accessories include two full-sized eyepieces, a Star Pointer finderscope for easy location of objects you wish to observe, and even software for your PC. "The Sky - Level 1" will let you study and print star charts from your computer screen... and that's just the beginning!

The Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ is a high quality, economical telescope with a superb optical system. These telescopes yield breathtaking views of the moon, Saturn with its ring structure, Jupiter and its belts, and hundreds of deep-sky objects including: galaxies, nebulae and star clusters. Add an optional solar filter and you can observe activity on the Sun. While observing, you'll notice that as the Earth rotates on its axis, stationary stars appear to move across the sky causing the object you're viewing will drift out of the field view. A telescope on a mount can be aimed at a celestial object and guided with the slow motion controls to track your target!

The Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ comes complete with a pre-assembled mount and tripod. The Celestron altizimuth mount is quite stable, with pan handle control and clutch for easy, smooth tracking. Strict adherence to Celestron's tough quality standards for manufacturing, assembly and testing ensures that each telescope not only performs well, but remains durable after years and years of use.

An excellent telescope for the money.
The optics are very good. The long 900mm focal length with a 70mm objective lens - you are not going to be bothered with CA, no color fringing to interfere with images.

The eyepieces are fair, the low power 45x is ok and the 90* diagonal is ok. BUT - to get the best views I use an Astro Tech
1.25" 99% Reflectivity dielectric mirror diagonal. And some higher quality eyepieces. Then you can really see how good this scope will perform! This one is a keeper.

The last Mars opposition - not a good one, but I could see an ice cap and some of the larger dark areas on Mars. Jupiter looms fairly large and shows quite a lot of detail & banding. Saturn at 150x is gorgeous!

But the Moon!! It really shows lots and lots of detail, mountains & craters are sharply defined. You can even see the dozens of tiny craters that are between Copernicus & Eratosthenes.

A great scope. A keeper!

I got this scope to take out on camping trips. It works great and OPT was able to ship it out to me the same day that I ordered it.

Its a good first time scope for beginners to astronomy. One can distinguish Saturn although quite small in the eyepiece (~1 mm in sizewhen viewed at 45x magnification. However the image quality is limited by the amount of light entering the scope, so trying to use a higher magnification didnt help much. Looking at stars was a bit difficult as they appeared faint in the eyepiece. One needs to be as far away from artificial light sources to get improved contrast.
