Vixen VMC260L Modified Cassegrain Telescope

Like the popular Schmidt-Cassegrain, the Vixen VMC260L is a true all purpose telescope. Despite its long focal length, the tube is only about 50cm (20”) long. As a result the instrument is very portable. With its large aperture of 260mm the Vixen VMC200L collects enough light for serious visual and photographical applications of both the planets and the deep sky.

Vixen's special Catadioptric design consists of two mirrors and two corrector lenses, one of which is a meniscus lens. The corrector lenses, placed in front of the secondary mirror, virtually eliminate spherical aberration and field curvature. Focusing is through primary mirror movement. The VMC has very good contrast. It is an excellent telescope for observing globular clusters, double stars and distant planets. With its open tube the telescope cools down quicker than an SCT or classical Maksutov-Cassegrain.

Another strong point of this telescope is its capability for high-grade astro-imaging. The meniscus correcting lens offers a large, corrected field. With the optional reducer you get shorter exposure times. The basic configuration already contains a piggy-back camera holder. You can then take photos through the telescope, using a telephoto lens parallel to the main instrument, or you can use the VMC260 for guiding while the camera sits on top.

Vixen VMC260L OTA
This OTA performs exactly as I expected and is exceptionally well made. The OTA was in perfect condition on delivery, due to thorough packaging, and the alignment was near-perfect as-recieved (CA to DE. I am using it on a Meade LXD 75 mount for photometry with absolutely no problems (3-10 lb weights and careful balancing are a must. I wish for a larger finder, with right-angle viewing, but this is not a problem for my observing program. For observers in the mid-Atlantic USA, I recommend a serious anti-dewing system for the finder but have not encountered any dew problems with the OTA. This is a robust and simple system. I have no pretty pictures to share yet, but have taken high-quality BVRI photometry data with this OTA. The light weight system with no corrector plate, and great optics made this an obvious choice for my needs. I do not hesitate to recommend the Vixen VC or VMC OTA systems for serious amateur work.
