Vixen VMC110L with Porta II Mount

Here is one of the best multiple purpose grab and go telescopes that is as perfectly suited for looking at the stars as it is the bird in the tree half a mile away. With more light gathering capability than anything else in this price range and a extremely light weight at 4.6 lbs, you might just forget you packed it with you to the top of that ridgeline (well okay maybe not!).

Don’t let its diminutive size and weight fool you, many telescopes like this design are used for research around the globe and even outside our atmosphere! You are sure to be blown away by its snap focus and razor like images.

The Vixen VMC110L, is a 110 mm (4.33 inch) aperture modified Cassegrain f/9.4 optical tube assembly . The VMC110L includes a built in flip mirror and comes with one eyepiece. With no corrector plate, the VMC110L features a small corrector lens ahead of the secondary mirror. This compact optical tube, with features found on our higher end telescopes, is a great pick up and go scope.

VMC110L
This scope makes a great grab and go or casual interest scope. I use it around my apartment on weeknights when I do not have time to set up my larger instruments. The optics are first rate, cool down time is almost nil, and at less than ten pounds for scope and mount easy to carry around. I do have issues with the Porta II mount. The spreader bar and tray are plastic and I doubt their long range survival. Be very careful of the slow motion controls as they are not beveled to match the pins on the mount. When attached the screw has nothing flat to hold onto and they work loose allowing the knob to fall off. Looking for a fallen black knob assembly in the dark is not fun! Overall the mount is steady enough for ease of use and the scope is excellent for its size. A good buy for someone looking for more value and resolution than can be had in a small refractor and size and portability are of paramount importance.

VMC110L with Porta mount
I've been out of the astronomy hobby for some time and I decided to pick it up again. I wanted to start out with something that I could easily move around and travel with, so I bought a VMC110L with the Porta mount from Vixen.

I have been really happy with it. Its very light and really easy to set up. The telescope itself is small enough to take as carry on when I travel. I also like the fact that I can just grab the tube and aim it without any knobs to loosen or tighten. It also has slow motion controls so I can make fine adjustments easily.

The VMC110L comes with a flip mirror on the back and a place to put a second eyepiece or camera. I found that all I needed to hook my Nikon to the back was a t-ring and it turns the scope into a lens. I was able to shoot scenery and birds easily and the mount was plenty steady enough to do so.

The accessories the scope came with are a red dot finder, which I really like, and a 25mm eyepiece that had enough eye relief that I could use it with my glasses on.

I found the VMC110L an great small scope, especially for traveling. Its portability and ease of use make it an excellent choice for taking along on trips. It works great as a daytime spotting scope as well as an astronomical instrument. I would recommend this scope to anyone wanting a portable, easy to use scope, in a compact well thought out package.
