Celestron CGEM DX Mount and Tripod

The CGEM DX™ mount is the newest member of our fully computerized Equatorial mount series capable of carrying Celestron’s high-end 11" and 14" optical tubes. The CGE PRO style, 2.75" leg tripod holds even the our 14" optics securely while dampening vibration, which is ideal for both imaging and visual observing. Capable of holding 50 lbs of payload and slewing at 5° per second, you will be able to instantly point to any of the celestial objects in the database.

Ergonomic Design - CGEM DX was designed to be ergonomically friendly with large Altitude and Azimuth adjustment knobs for quick and easy polar alignment adjustment. The internal RA and DEC motor wiring provides a clean look and an easy and trouble free set up.

Innovation - The CGEM DX series has a new innovative Polar alignment procedure called All-Star™. All-Star allows users to choose any bright star, while the software calculates and assists with polar alignment. Another great feature of the CGEM DX sure to please astroimagers, is the Permanent Periodic Error Correction (PEC) which will allow users to train out the worm gears periodic errors, while the mount retains the PEC recordings.

Performance - For objects near the Meridian (imaginary line passing from North to South), the CGEM DX will track well past the Meridian for uninterrupted imaging through the most ideal part of the sky. The CGEM mount has a robust database with over 40,000 objects, 100 user defined programmable objects and enhanced information on over 200 objects.

Power Management - Redesigned electronics deliver constant regulated power to the motors making them capable of driving the telescope even when not perfectly balanced. This allows the CGEM DX to have the payload capacity of that of much larger mounts without sacrificing smooth tracking motion and pointing accuracy across the entire sky.

Quality mount with a few issues
Out of the box my first CGEM DX was completely defective. there was huge DEC axis play (not backlash), one of the motors cut out intermittently, a big flat spot in the worm gear causing a THUD at the same place in the rotation, and finally but most disturbingly, the saddle was about 7-8 degrees off center from the index marks. What a mess! i returned it to Celestron ( A big mistake. Just send it to OPT and they will far exceed your expectations) Three weeks later the replacement arrived and the only improvements were the DEC axis play was better, the motors were fine, and the flat spot was gone. The saddle on this mount was also 7-8 degrees out of alignment and the play was still annoying. (stars moved around while focusing). long story ahort, I fixed each of the problems myself by searching the internet for solutions. I did not Hypertune as it is not necessary on these newer DX mounts. DEC and RA play are adjustable, but it's more involved than just snugging the gears tighter. My mount performs well now only a few issues that i will fix later on. Unless you love to take apart new stuff, you might consider a Losmandy instead. OPT is a wonderful company with great people. they will work to insure your mount is a good one. Don't let Celestron do the replacement.

Reliable, portable mount for astrophotography
I've been using this mount for about 18 months, with reliable results without any auto-guiding. The mount polar-aligns easily, and I can get over 60-90 seconds of exposure on my 11" Edge HD without auto-guiding on my Mallincam. Other members of my club have gotten similar results with their DSLR cameras. It's a bonus this mount is compatible with my astronomy club's pier. The mount is solidly built and portable, but I sure would not want anything heavier to take into the field. A very good value for 50 lbs capacity! highly recommended.

I have owned this for 3 months now. And all I can say is WOW!!

I was a life-long user of Meade products and this was the beginning of my move over to Celestron. The entire set-up exceeded my expectations by far, not to mention the amazing support from the staff at OPT pre-sale as well as post.

I have used the setup a dozen times so far and its flawless. The mount is absolutely rock solid. Its very easy and intuitive to assemble and align. I have never been so satisfied with an astronomical product.

This is money well invested not merely spent.....

If you're looking for a rock solid observing/astrophotography mount under $2000.00 there is no need to look any further, just go CGEM-DX

Known Bug
The first night it worked just like advertised. The next night I was trying to goto one of the panstar comets so I calibrated it and after that it went nutts. The next night I try to align it and it pointed in unheard of direction including below the horizon. I was not very happy to say the less. So I went on-line to Celestron Support and this is what I found.
"Your mount may normally perform just fine, BUT! when you conduct a two star alignment with calibration stars, the mount is way off when performing a goto of the calibration stars. The list of stars presented for alignment or calibration does not make sense." I'll say that's a under statement. It goes on to say.
"This is a rare bug in the programming of the NexStar and NexStar+ hand controls.
Celestron programmers have not yet tracked down the cause of this problem."
They suggest a reset of the Factory Settings to fix, I will try that tonight.
I am very disappointed. What make this so upsetting is the fact that I bought an expensive, well known product that this company put out on the market knowing full well that they have a defect in one of the components.

hi. what counterweight do you suggest for a c11 plus guide scope celestron 800mm ?
Hello! Is there any way to set this mount to a 13° Latitude?? (For example I could set my old CG-5 at such latitude,by unscrewing a screw) Is it possible with this mount? I'd love to upgrade. Thanks a lot.
What counterweight do I need for a C14 on a CGEM DX Mount.
Will this mount handle your TPO 12" f/4 Imaging Newtonian OTA? If so, does it need a second Counterweight?
