The Baader Hyperion-Aspherics are great for projection imaging, and are threaded to accept the full line of Hyperion Digital T-Rings for a robust direct attachment of almost any camera. The clever use of 2"x24tpi SCT threads for attaching the 2" barrel permits the Hyperion-Aspherics to directly thread onto the rear cell of popular SCTs. This results in the highest rigidity possible for imaging. Two barrel sizes are provided with each Hyperion Aspheric. The standard 2” barrel provides the full 72º field of view, and a special wide field 1-1/4" barrel provides the maximum true field ever in this barrel size, with a field stop of 1.265”(32mm)! - perfect for extracting every bit of field possible in 1.25" focusers or binoviewers.

- I love it
I'm rather new to astronomy,(2 years, I just upgraded my 6 Dobsonian to a 10 Dobsonian, so the view I was getting with just the eyepiece that came with the new scope was quite amazing. After some careful research I decided to go with the Baader Hyperion 36mm, 2-1.25, and I was blown away.The night it came, it was a warm,clear night for viewing, considering I live in a Chicago suburb, and it was January, and the moon was full. I kept changing eyepieces to compare all the other views with this eyepiece, and it wasn't even close. I just started aiming the scope at what looked like an empty black sky, only to be blown away with how many stars, galaxies, and many other objects that were actually there. With the wide field of view and it's clarity make it seem like your looking out a window. I meant to be outside for about 20 minutes, but I got so caught up with the amazing views, I ended up being out for over an hour. The quality, and price make this eyepiece a no brainer. If all Baader eyepieces are this good, I'm going to be switching over all my existing ones. I think I'm spoiled now. If your not familiar with OPT, I can also highly recommend them. They ship very fast, and answer all my questions promptly.

I have owned other Hyperions, also own the Pentax Zoom 6.5-19.5 mm and Hyperion Zoom, but this Hyperion aspheric excels in low power views with sharp views in almost 75 % of the field, excellent contrast, world class multicoatings ( no internal or external reflections , space-walk experience, a lot of eye reflief and excellent color balance. I think the BEST BUY for for wide fields.

Thank you for your question. You indeed can use this lens with a 1.25" focuser since it comes with both 2" & 1.25" barrels. The long answer is yes, but due to exit pupil restrictions and coma with fast Newtonians they may not work especially well below f/5.
A fully dark adapted pupil in an adult observer's eye will dilate to 5-7mm (usually toward the lower range as you get older), meaning that a telescope producing an exit pupil larger than this will be wasting light by having it hit the inner iris rather than the pupil. In addition, coma in fast Newtonians and astigmatism and slight optical defects in the human eye become more prevalent with exit pupils of 4-5mm and larger. The exit pupil is found by the focal length of an eyepiece divided by the f/ratio of the scope, so with the 36mm and an f/4.5 scope -> 36/4.5 = 8mm exit pupil. For an f/6 scope you get 6mm, which is more manageable.
An 8mm exit pupil is only usable in very dark skies with a young observer, fully dark adapted eyes with no astigmatism, a coma corrector in place, and the knowledge that you are still losing a bit of light in exchange for a wider field. If you are in the city, you may see problems with the eyepiece including a shadow from the secondary mirror in the center of the FOV due to your eyes not fully dark adapting with the light pollution.Answer by: Chris (Admin) on Mar 3, 2014 5:57:37 AM
