ZWO ASI174MM Monochrome CMOS Cooled Astronomy Camera

When it comes to imaging cameras with advanced capabilities, the ZWO ASI174MM Monochrome CMOS Camera seems like a natural progression from the ASI120MM-S. State-of-the-art features include a high speed USB 3.0 port, standard 2" M42 x 0.75 internal thread interface, 0.25" tripod thread mount on the rear, and an AR window. However, it's the Sony IMX174 monochrome CMOS sensor that separates the ASI174MM from previous ASI models. The IMX174 has a lot of advantages when taking high quality solar, lunar, planetary, and deep sky object imaging into consideration.

This cooled version incorporates active TEC temperature control for the ability to cool the sensor to 35C to 40C degrees below ambient.  This enhanced cooling control offers the best image stability for longer imaging sessions.  


Sony IMX174 CMOS Sensor Features


  • 1/1.2” Sony CMOS image sensor has 2.35M effective pixels in a 1936 x 1216 array. Pixel size is 5.86 µm square.


  • Sony Pregius Global Shutter: The result of a new pixel with analog memory is that it permits the scanning of all pixels simultaneously. The Sony IMX174's global shutter function provides improved image quality by making sure images of moving objects don't undergo focal plane distortion. This is especially helpful when performing solar or lunar imaging. Less than optimal seeing, wind, or movement can alter the image if the readout speed is not quick enough (< 30fps).


  • The Exmor label, a Sony trademark, means the CMOS image sensor is regarded as a top performing model, with high speed processing, low noise, and low power dissipation by using column-parallel A/D conversion.


  • Ideally, an astro-imaging device should have high QE (quantum efficiency) and low noise. The ASI174MM's peak QE is 78%. When compared with the ASI120, the QE curve is slightly higher in B & G and slightly lower in R & IR. Read noise measures out to be only 6e-!


  • The Sony IMX174 sensor functions at 128.2 frames per second at 12 bit ADC, and 164.5 frames per second at 10 bit ADC at full resolution.


  • ROI (Region of Interest) mode gives imagers the ability to set up to 16 areas for capture within the area of effective pixels for an even higher frame rate.
