Red Dot Finders are first and foremost non-magnifying. Red dot finders, also called reflex finders, allows the user to simply place the telescope on the point in the sky where the finder is aimed!  They project a red dot on to a small screen. You aim the telescope by placing the red dot in the center of the object. More progressive models also offer a flip-mirror design that allows for more comfortable head positioning and all models have adjustable brightness levels. The Telrad or reticule models operate in much the same way, but rather than a red dot have concentric circles or "bullseye".  (Word to the wise: Always keep a spare battery in your eyepiece case.)
