Some of the most picturesque celestial objects are too large to fit in the field of view of an imaging refractor and camera. What’s more, most objects in deep space are very faint and therefore challenging to image without taking very long exposures, increasing the potential for error. Our new Orion 0.8x Focal Reducer for Refractors addresses these obstacles by increasing your refractor telescope’s field of view while reducing the effective focal length by a factor of 0.8x, thereby providing a shorter, more optically “fast” focal ratio to increase astrophotography efficiency. Using the 0.8x focal reducer not only enables your refractor telescope to acquire a larger field of view, but also makes it capable of capturing bright, vividly detailed astrophotos in considerably less time.
Orion 0.8x Focal Reducer for Refractor Telescopes
The Orion 0.8x Imaging Focal Reducer’s fully multi-coated, 38mm clear aperture optics are housed in a sleek, all-machined, anodized aluminum body. Internal glare-threads provide maximum image contrast and brightness. It’s designed for use with any refractor telescope equipped with a 2” focuser, and requires 55mm of backfocus. Use with a DSLR and appropriate T-ring combination will not require use of any spacers. For use with a CCD astrophotography camera with less backfocus, we highly recommend using the Orion T-thread Spacer Ring Kit (sold separately) to achieve proper distance.
You can further enhance your astrophotos by using 2” imaging filters with the Orion 0.8x Imaging Focal Reducer since it is conveniently threaded for use with 2” filters. Unit weighs 6.2 oz.

Product QuestionsI am looking at this reducer for use with my MallinCAM Universe mounted on an Explore Scientific 127mm refractor.
Is the camera thread a T-mount connection?
Is the focuser threaded to allow you to add a filter?Question by: Gerry Lebing on Aug 30, 2015 11:09:00 AMThe thread on the camera side of this reducer is T thread, and the back focus is 55mm, so you may need to add a spacer or two between your camera and the reducer to get the spacing correct. The 2" barrel of the reducer has a 48mm thread that will accept 2" filters.Answer by: Chris Hendren (Admin) on Aug 31, 2015 1:24:00 PMI would like to know if this reducer will work well with my Explore Scientific 80 mm apo refractor and its Explore Scientific Field Flattener (2") . Thanks in advance.Question by: Mariano Ribas on Jul 14, 2016 7:36:00 PMUsing this reducer with the ES field flattener will not work properly and the image will not be able to come to focus. There are other reducer-flatteners that would produce the results that you are looking for. Please give a call at 1-800-483-6287 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss options that are available to you.Answer by: Jonathan Cheek (Admin) on Jul 18, 2016 1:58:00 PMI have the Williams Optics GTF 102mm (older red model) and I was wondering if this flattener would work. I would need to focus with a DSLR.
