Baader Multi Purpose Coma Corrector (MPCC Mark III)

The Baader Planetarium Multi-Purpose Coma Corrector (MPCC Mark III) enables owners of fast Newtonian telescopes to use their instrument for taking stunning wide-field images, or visually, for delivering wide-field views with stars that remain pinpoint to the edge - with no magnification increase!

The MPCC Mark III has been optimized for Newtonians with focal ratios from f/4 to f/6, and will deliver 12micron stars across a full 35mm frame size. Independent optical laboratory tests (by ITE) have confirmed that the MPCC Mark III is the sharpest wide-field coma corrector available, and provides the best edge of field illumination. Visual users have reported great results even down to f/3.7. The optics are anti-reflection coated with the finest 7 layer multi-coatings available. The MPCC Mark III is also priced very reasonably. It's modularity lets you purchase only the parts you need. For imaging with DSLRs, only the MPCC Mark III is required. For visual, the MPCC Mark III can be configured with any of our eyepiece holders or directly coupled to 2" eyepieces using Astro T-2 System components.

Using the Baader MPCC Mark III for Visual Astronomy

Dobsonian users with f/3.7 - f/5 scopes have been discovering the unique benefits of the MPCC Mark III versus other coma correctors. The Baader Multi-Purpose Coma Corrector can be inexpensively configured for visual use with 1-1/4" and 2" eyepieces.

No Magnification Increase! The MPCC Mark III delivers full fields for the widest 2" eyepieces. Why spend the big $$ on a large widefield eyepiece, only to have its field squeezed by the coma corrector? Now, a 31mm ultra-widefield eyepiece can perform like a 31mm, and not a 26mm.. Also, unlike some correctors, the MPCC Mark III has minimal effect on the eyepoint and blackout behavior of long focal length eyepieces.

No additional Back-Focus (in-travel) Required! In fact, in direct-coupled configurations, the Baader MPCC Mark III actually increases back-focus by about 10mm. If your eyepiece will focus without a coma corrector, it will reach focus with the MPCC Mark III. This is not the case with some other coma correctors.

Low Cost! The Baader MPCC Mark III is about half the cost of other correctors. Some users have even purchased more than one and leave them permanently attached to their favorite 2" eyepieces.

Using the Baader MPCC Mark III for Imaging

The MPCC Mark III is the ideal match for today's Digital SLRs. Owners of these new cameras find them to be ideally mated with today's fast f/4-f/5 Newtonians required to keep exposures short. The MPCC Mark III enables these users to fully correct their scopes and produce superb pinpoint color deep sky images without the complexity of more expensive CCD astro cameras. Owners of Vixen Newtonians will appreciate the inclusion of filter threads, and the high sharpness of the images. Unlike other coma-correctors, the MPCC Mark III does NOT extend the focal ratio (so, your images will be shot at the full speed of your telescope).

The Baader MPCC Mark III inserts into 2" focusers and has external T-threads on the output side (and is also threaded for standard 2"/48mm filters). Simply attach any 35mm film or digital SLR to the MPCC Mark III, using commonly available T-adapters. Users of CCD cameras can attach in the same way through the use of Baader Astro T-2 System components (adapters, extension tubes). The MPCC Mark III is designed for a nominal 55mm distance from the mounting flange to the film plane (55mm is the standard dimension for all SLRs, measured from the front of their T-adapter to their film plane). It also extends the focus point by approximately 10mm, so no additional back-focus is needed to use the MPCC Mark III (of course, this assumes your camera will already reach focus in your telescope, without the MPCC Mark III).

The latest version of the MPCC Mark III now includes a removable stop flange. Removal of this flange exposes an M48 external thread, which enables the MPCC Mark III to be directly coupled to 2" eyepieces and inserted fully inside 2" focusers.

The MPCC Mark III has been tested and found to work well on Meade SN Schmidt-Newtonians.

Additional Specs:
There is an excellent review of the Baader MPCC Mark III in the May-June 2014 issue of Astronomy Technology Today. A key point made there: The camera end of the Mark III comes native with an M48 thread. To this Baader adds an M48 to T2 adapter. This can be removed to utilize the full aperture of the Mark III and reduces the possibility of vignetting. E.g advantage can be taken of a Canon EOS wide mouth adapter. Equally important, the larger aperture makes it easier to pick off a star to the edge of the field with an Off Axis Guider. This feature of the Baader is not clear in OPT's picture. Just do a Google search on the Baader to find pictures which show the removable M48-T2 adapter. I do not currently have one but plan to purchase. My review stars simply mirror the opinions of others.

This coma is amazing, gives a fully flat field with my f5 newtonian and an APS-C sensor. Very easy to use with DSRL. Great product!

Corrector with F4 Newt
I bought this corrector for my Astro-Tech AT8IN F/4 Newtonian. Without the corrector, stars at the edge of the field look like arrowheads. I had heard poor results from correctors on F/4 scopes, so crossed my fingers on this one. In short it fully corrects the stars at the edge of field without increasing F Ratio! I'm totally happy with this corrector's performance.

Questions & Answers

Product Questions

I have a Schmidt Newtonian (F4).  If using this coma corrector, will I have to move the mirror(s) to reach focus?  Thank you for any information.
I have an f4 Newtonian.  I want this corrector for visual observing, not photography.   I also have an adapter for my 1.25" eyepieces.   Will it work for that?
Will this work with a CCD camera with a 1.25" nosepiece, or must the camera be screwed into the unit?
Would this work behind a focal reducer on a Schmidt Cassegrain? When I image with a focal reducer I get too much coma.
