SBIG 8300 Color Filter Wheel
Due to the large size of the KAF-8300 CCD, typical 1.25" filters are just too small to fully cover the sensor without some vignetting in the corners. This may be acceptable at f/7 or longer focal lengths, but at shorter focal lengths the effect becomes greater. For this reason SBIG will offer a new 5-position filter wheel that will hold 36mm filters. A full set of 36mm filters will be available for the ST-8300 camera from several filter suppliers: Astrodon, Baader and Custom Scientific. We have also been informed that Astronomik intends to make filters in the 36mm size. So there is a wide variety of filters available. In addition, for those who may already have 2" filters we have designed an adapter plate to mate the ST-8300 camera to our FW8-STL 8-position 2" filter wheel. The FW8-STL holds both 2" filters in threaded cells and 50.8mm round unmounted filters.
For those users with slower optical systems, 1.25 inch filters may be acceptable. In this case both the CFW9 and CFW10-SA filter wheels will fit the ST-8300 camera and these too will operate automatically by plugging into the I2C port on the ST-8300 camera. In the sample image gallery below the narrowband image of the Pacman Nebula was shot with the ST-8300 using a CFW8A and 1.25" filters.
The new FW5-8300 filter wheel is now through the prototype stage and we are awaiting parts for production. There have been two modifications to the original design that have required separate prototyping. A final small modification is bring made now. The led time for production parts is about 2 months. It is a single carousel design with a new filter retaining system that makes changing filters easier than with individual retaining screws for each filter. The carousel is also interchangeable for swapping out 5 filter sets all at the same time.
The telescope side of the filter wheel has a round adapter plate with standard t-threads. This piece can easily be removed and replaced with an optional Nikon lens adapter as shown in the upper photo.
List price for the new FW5-8300 is $695 without filters, or $995 with a set of 36mm LRGB filters from Baader Planetarium. Parfocal narrowband filters from Baader Planetarium and Astrodon are also available in 36mm size. The optional Nikon lens adapter may be added at any time.
