If you are doing CCD imaging, chances are good that you will need or want to use special filters to capture objects in their full detail and beauty.  Most monochrome cameras do not offer a built-in space to place filters.  They need to be set into a special housing called a filter wheel.  Most filter wheels are camera specific, and they are absolutely specific to filter size and quantity.  These units can be operated manually, controlled remotely, or even through the use of a computer connection.

While the filter wheel is really the housing, the carousel will hold your filters.  It is not unlike an old-fashioned slide projector system, in that it holds single filters in position and moves them into place when called for.  It is handy for you to have an extra filter wheel if you have more filters than your wheel can carry at one time.  Carousels are filter wheel specific and come in a large variety of filter positions and filter sizes.
