Counterweights & Balance Systems
A well-balanced telescope optical tube assembly is crucial if you want to avoid putting unncessary stress and strain on the gears. Without counterweight systems, most telescopes would only balance with minimal accessories attached. When heavy accessories such as cameras or binoviewers are added, counterweights my be needed to achieve proper balance. Tracking devices, computer guidance, and even simple observation all rely on telescope equipment being in perfect equilibrium. Telescope packages often include specific counterbalance weights and a recommended location of where these counterweights should be placed. A wide variety of weights are available, and they are drilled to fit certain shaft sizes or types. Remember, counterweights may be moved closer to or further away from the mount to balance your telescope system. This should help lift any pressure you may feel to find the ideal weight. Use your best judgement and you'll be fine. However, if you're concerned you may not be choosing the correct weight, contact us and we'll point you in the right direction.
