Hubble 5-star Artificial Star(s)

The star test is the ultimate method to test and collimate your telescopes. The most and very much the only difficult part of doing the star test is that you need a star. Sadly, a real star is not always available, and you really may not want to spend your precious observation time doing star test even when it is available. Of course, you will also need a good tracking system for doing star test with the moving star. After all the troubles, due to the turbulence, the real star may not even reveal the true quality of your telescopes or give you a perfect collimation.

An artificial star will provide you an excellent alternative mean to do the star test anytime and anywhere you want, without all the drawbacks of the real stars. However, the problem with the artificial star is that you really need different size of artificial stars for different telescopes of different apertures with different F/#, and even for the same telescopes but at different distances, and under different lighting environment.

The innovative Hubble 5-star Artificial Star(s) is a perfect solution to this problem. It has 5 bright white LEDs with 5 precision pinholes (50/100/150/200/250 microns). It will enable you to test practically all the telescopes of different apertures with different F/#, from any reasonable distances needed, and under different lighting environment.

We are not suggesting that you should stop using any other methods or any collimating tools you feel comfortable with. You can continue your current practice, but after that always use the star test to validate or confirm your scope is indeed in perfect collimation; no other method (except the star test) can guarantee a perfect collimation. If your scope is still not in a perfect collimation after your current practice, you need to use the star test to fine-tune the collimation to its perfection. However, if you do not have any other collimating tool yet, then a star test with Hubble 5-star Artificial Star(s) alone will enable you to reach a perfect collimation with your telescopes.

Hubble 5-star Artificial Star(s) Advantages

  • You can instantly find out which star is best for your particular telescope at that particular distance under that particular lighting environment by simply choosing the smallest possible star, but which still give you clear defocused image.
  • You can even adjust the brightness of the stars by twisting the LED cap.
  • You can mask out any 4 of the 5 stars with a provided magnetic mask.
  • Please make sure the cleanness of the mask, and use it only when needed to prevent the blockage of the pinholes.
  • The unit should be kept in a clean Ziploc bag when not used; separated from the magnetic mask.
  • It is powered by 3 AAA batteries (Not Included).

It Really Does Work
This little device is economical and quite effective. Each of the 5 artificial stars gives an Airy disk exactly like the photos in various star testing books & websites show, and I am very pleased. With this tool I can now collimate without suffering the ill effects of atmospheric turbulence. As such, collimating has become so fast and easy that I use it to keep my scopes tuned like the violin section of the London Philharmonic. I gave this tool 5 stars, but considered giving it 4 because although its performance is fantastic the flashlight itself is definitely a "low budget" model. But hey, this tool isn't being used for tactical military ops, so it's up to the task. Besides, we astronomers are good at treating things with care. Overall, I highly recommend it, and if mine ever fails, I'll buy another.

A must for the SCT user
Very simple to use, and gives spot on collimation at a very nice price; compared to other SCT alignment tools available, this thing is a steal. Doing a proper star test with this takes quite a bit of distance between artificial star and scope (about 130 ft for an 8" f/10 SCT), but I have found getting perfect collimation only takes about 50 ft. of distance. I use this every time before I look at the planets, it makes collimation quick and easy and the results are astounding. After collimating with the Hubble, and in steady air, I've been able to easily make out the eddies behind the Great Red Spot on Jupiter with my 8" SCT at 400x magnification.

useful
Naturally after a new scope buy, the clouds rolled in and stayed, but I was severly out of collimation. This helped me get close, but still needed a real star for fine collimation. I used it at around 50 yards. The beauty is that you dont need clear skies, and using this practically eliminates atmospheric disturbances, which helps.
Again though, looking at a real star, I still had some adjustments to make.

Can't beat it
I could not get the fine airy disk for final collmination for over a month. Got this and used it on an overcast day and collminated my scope fine airy disk in 15 minutes! condition no longer matter when it comes to collminating an SCT

Excellent Tool For Collimation
I use this product to ensure proper collimation of my catadioptric telescopes and highly recommend it.

Hubble artificial star
It's only 25 bucks, compared to $120 for the competition, and that must be factored into my comments. Having five stars to choose from isn't very important to practice, and the five diffraction patterns overlap confusingly. I had to block off the superfluous stars with electrical tape.
