Just like tuning a guitar, some telescope types require minor adjustments called collimation.  Collimating a telescope is lining up its optical components, such as lenses, mirrors, prisms and eyepieces.  When components are poorly aligned, image quality suffers greatly and the telescope's performance capabilities are lost.  The thought of collimating a telescope might seem scary, but it's not hard when you have the proper tools.  By having the correct equipment, like a laser collimator, you run far less risk of misalignment. The security the proper tools offer will make this routine maintenance action far less intimidating.  For owners of Schmidt Cassegrains and especially Dobsonians, collimation will and should be a routine part of your nightly set up.
