Celestron EdgeHD 1400 Aplanatic Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope Optical Tube Assembly

Introducing the EdgeHD Telescope Series, Celestron’s new flagship telescope line...

Celestron has taken another bold step as the market leader in telescopes with the introduction of our latest series of high-end telescopes. Since the moment Celestron first started producing Schmidt Cassegrain optical systems, they have continued to design high-quality optics with pride. After years of research and development, Celestron has now taken one giant step!

The Edge HD is Celestron’s latest innovation that will surely be the system of choice for the serious astro-imagers. The new Edge High Definition telescope series features an Aplanatic Schmidt optical system that produces pinpoint star images all the way to the edge of the field. Some optical systems currently on the market may produce coma free images. But there is a difference.... the optical difference. Not only is the Celestron Edgecoma free, but it also has a built in field flattener to ensure sharp focus all the way to the edge of the field, producing true Astrograph quality images. This results in pinpoint, High Definition star images throughout your astro photograph.

These superior features make our new Celestron HD series the new gold standard in Astro Imaging. The EdgeHD is an aplanatic Schmidt telescope designed to produce aberration-free images across a wide visual and photographic field of view. The optical system was designed to reduce more than just off-axis star coma, but also to give an astrograph quality flat focal plane all the way to the edge of the field of view.

Many optical designs that advertise themselves as “astrograph” quality actually only produce pinpoint stars across a curved focal plane. While this may be acceptable for visual observing, stars will appear out of focus at the edge when used with a flat chip sensor of a digital camera. Edge HD optics produce a focal plane more than three-times flatter than a standard Schmidt Cassegrain telescope and dramatically flatter than other competing coma-free designs. This guarantees you visibly sharp stars across some of the largest CCD chips available today.

Now let's talk about Celestron quality... Superior edge performance not only creates rounder, more pleasing stars but actually improves the resolution and limiting magnitude when compared to telescopes of equal aperture. When it comes to the Celestron HD series coupled with Celestron’s StarBright XLT coating group on every surface, EdgeHD optics gives you maximum light throughput across the widest visual and photographic spectrum... It's a vision you'll never forget.

Celestron EdgeHD 1400 OTA Features

  • Mirror Support Knobs – Flexible tension clutches hold the mirror in place and reduce image shift when rotating the tube around the mount.

  • Tube Vents – Cooling vents located on the rear cell allow hot air to be released from behind the primary mirror.

  • Fastar Versatility – All EdgeHD optical tubes are Fastar compatible for imaging down to f/2 with optional accessories.

  • Brighter Star Images - Light becomes more concentrated when focused precisely. This maximizes image brightness.

Optically Excellent
I completely agree with the first reviewer. It's a pity the company went cheap on several components of its flagship instrument. In addition, the optional 0.7X focal reducer is way overpriced. While it works well both visually and photographically, contrary to claims it does not have a 40 degree clear fov, and vignettes considerably with a full frame DSLR

Wonderful OTA
The OTA itself is quite good. It's also considerably overly priced for what it is. I give it four stars rather than five because it's overpriced.

Minor nit, especially if you don't use the finder scope much: I found the finder scope and bracket somewhat lacking.

The finder scope is not illuminated. That can make the cross-hairs difficult to discern at times. Worse though is that the finder scope dovetail mounting has been considerably cheapened and made difficult to align. If you plan to use the finder scope at all, buy yourself a better finder scope dovetail mount, such as the Celestron 51149-A or the Losmandy RDF65. I happened to have one from an older C-14, so I just used that instead.

If you're putting this OTA on an AP-1200 or a Paramount ME or MX, then I highly recommend dispensing with the dovetail and replacing it with an Andy Homeyer scope cradle. The scope cradle is expensive, but it provides a much firmer and more versatile mounting.

Be sure to buy an ADM dovetail mounted weight system (ADM's is better designed than Losmandy's to help balance this OTA in the DEC axis. It's surprisingly more back-heavy than a regular C-14. Otherwise you may have to slide your OTA unacceptably far forward (or even impossibly far forward depending on your mount.

The mirror locks are a nice touch and honestly do help minimize mirror flop on meridian flip and such, but they won't prevent image shift during focusing. You'll still want an external focuser, such as a TCF-Si, PDF, Atlas or the very innovative Clement focuser.

The ideal back-focus distance for the C-14 EdgeHD is exactly 5.75 (146mm from the back of the larger opening (not the smaller one. If you can't place your image plane at this exact distance, then for best results you should error on the side of longer rather than shorter.
