Sky & Telescope - The Caldwell Card
While Charles Messier made a catalogue of faint fuzzy objects to be avoided when searching for comets, Britain's one-and-only Sir Patrick Caldwell-Moore has created a list of incredibly beautiful and entertaining deep sky objects of his own. The Caldwell Catalog is comprised of 109 cosmic gems well suited for both beginner's and seasoned sky veterans alike. The 109 objects on the list range from magnitude 1 through 13, and Declination +85° to -80°, so there is something there for everyone of every telescope size and observing position... A true "must see" list. Two of the obvious objects were never even given NGC designations!
Like the Messier Card, the "Sky and Telescope Caldwell Card" is a star chart on one side and and tabulates the positions (epoch 2000.0), sizes, and apparent magnitudes of the objects on the other side. Just because it's inexpensive doesn't make it cheap. To make it last through years of use, the Caldwell Card is printed on heavy card stock and laminated to protect it from moisture and wear. The Sky & Telescope Caldwell Card makes a great gift to give to any astronomer and is well suited to purchasing several to encourage astronomy group members to join the Caldwell Club!
