Meade 20mm Series 4000 Super Plossl Eyepiece

The world standard in telescope oculars, Meade Series 4000 eyepieces yield the widest possible fields of view, consistent with pinpoint edge-of-field sharpness and long eye relief—and yet with extremely low astigmatism, spherical aberration, and off-axis color. Incorporating 7-layer multi-coatings and edge-blackened optics for optimum image contrast, these sophisticated 4- to 8-element designs permit levels of optical performance generally impossible to achieve with eyepieces of fewer elements.

All Series 4000 eyepieces include a soft rubber eyeguard, custom fitted to each eyepiece with a bayonet mount. The eyeguards fold down for eyeglass wearers, and in fact the folded eyeguard shields eyeglasses from coming into contact with the metal eyepiece housings. Rubber grips are provided on all but the three shortest focal length Super Plössl eyepieces.

Designed to utilize the very latest in optical glass types, Meade 4-element Super Plössls are excellent general-purpose eyepieces. For observing hairline lunar and planetary detail, splitting close double stars, or for resolving faint nebulosity in deep-space, Meade Super Plössls optimize the performance of any telescope type, whether f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain, f/16 refractor, or f/4 reflector. They also operate well in conjunction with the air-spaced design of the Meade #140 2x Apochromatic Barlow. All focal lengths through 32mm are parfocal.

Works great in a short tube reflector
I tried the 20mm Meade Super Plossl in my Starblast 4.5 and Celestron 3 inch firstscope. It gives great low power views without V-shaped stars or problems like I had with other Plossls. It has good eye relief and works well barlowed. I like it better than the 26mm Meade Super Plossl, 25mm Orion Sirius Plossl or 17mm Orion Sirius Plossl. I tried lots of budget eyepieces and this one is definitely a keeper. It's a great inexpensive upgrade for the low end factory eyepieces that come with lots of scopes. Keeping it Simple
I purchased this eyepiece to cover a particular hole in my eyepiece collection. The fact is, I have a wide angle 20MM EP, but as a wide angle ocular it is susceptible to some edge distortion especially at high magnification. The Meade 20MM Super Plossl is an inexpensive eyepiece that I felt would fit in nicely with my other eyepieces. Besides, I like to collect eyepieces especially plossls.

Why plossls? Because plossls represent a very simple solution to an age old observational problem; to come up with an eyepiece that will provide a nice sharp view at high mag without edge distortion when used for wide views. The plossl eyepiece has come the closest to solving this problem without breaking the bank. They provide good views with a decent FOV of usually 52 degrees and with good eye relief till one reaches the short focal lengths. Finally, I have read that they are an easy eyepiece to manufacture. Thus, their price is almost always within reason.

So, when I look to purchase an EP to fill a gap in my collection I always check out plossls, especially those from a known company. A "name" company such as Meade or Orion etc. usually have good quality control. So, that led me to the Meade 20MM Series 4000 Super Plossl.

Make no mistake, this is not the same eyepiece that Meade introduced approximately 10 to 15 years ago. At that time the Series 4000 came with 5 lens. About 2002, Meade transformed the Series 4000 EPs to a standard plossl with 4 lens. To their credit they also dropped the price. For a while they sold the Series 5000 plossls with 5 lens. None the less Meade continued to and still carries the Series 4000 as their standard plossl. They are a fine example of a plossl design. A simple solution to a nagging problem.

The eyepiece has the look and feel of a well made ocular. I was disappointed to note the lettering was painted on and not stamped on. If the eyepiece receives good use some of the lettering will wear off. In the night, this may cause a little bit of confusion as one may misidentify the EP. Other wise, the eyepiece has a fine fit an finish.
When used with any of my scopes the images are nice from edge to edge. Now, I own 6 different scope with focal lengths from F6 to F11; reflectors, refractors, and an SCT. So, I am in the position to notice how an ocular will perform with various scopes. When used with all of these scopes there was no observable distortion. Even in faster scopes such as my F6 DOB, the images were fine showing great detail and good color. I did not observe any glare or ghosting. The eye relief and FOV were as advertised. It performed better than I expected; above average for the price range of this type of EP

When coupled with a high quality barlow the images improved. When I paired the eyepiece with my Celestron Ulima 2X barlow, it performed more like a high quality 10MM eyepiece than a standard 10MM plossl. The combo maintained the nice eye relief without too much of an increase. This increase is a real problem caused by thebarlow that plagues medium to high focal length plossls. At times the eye relief will increase to such an extent it becomes difficult to properly position your eye. The result is irritating black outs. This 20MM does not suffer as such. The increse in eye relief is noticeable, but no so great to cause a problem. Finally the 52 degree FOV helped produce images that at times were simply dramatic.

So, I believe this to be an exceptional eyepiece especially when one considers the price. It is a classic example of a simple design properly executed. I would eagerly recommend this eyepiece. It would be a find addition to any collection. Review by lenny / (Posted on 3/5/2014)
