The QHY IMX 178 boasts the highest resolution of QHY's new QHY5III series of CMOS sensor cameras, at a whopping 3072*2048. What is more, it has an incredibly small pixel size at only 2.4um and a large FOV that makes it ideal for use as a guide camera. It excels as a Guide Camera, it's wide FOV and high resolution making it more than capable of locating a high number of guide stars. It's also a top notch planetary imaging camera, and even has applications as an entry level deep sky imaging unit! For deep sky imaging, QHY5III178 has the anti-amp glow control function which can reduce the amplifer glow significantly.

The Sensor used in the IMX178 is Sony's trademarked new StarVis BSI image sensor. The STARVIS is back-illuminated pixel technology used in CMOS image sensors for high sensitivity applications. With a sensitivity of 2000 mV or more per 1 ┬Ám^2, it's quality is truly stellar in magnitude. It is fully capable of realizing high picture quality in the visible-light and near infrared light regions, and is all in all a splendid sensor to use.

As with the rest of the QHY5III Series, the QHY IMX178 keeps the 1.25inch eyepiece design. The advantage of this design is a more efficient transfer of heat to the outer case enabling lower noise especially in high ambient temperatures. The 1.25 inch design also offers the shortest possible backfocus, making the camera ideal for Off Axis guiding. In addition, the QHY5III178 uses the rugged and dependable LEMOS style of Guiding Port connectors.
