Meade 12 Lightbridge
I bought this scope as an easy to transport, large aperture scope, with the expectations of having the primary mirror re-figured for maximum performance. But after having this scope out on the few good seeing nights we've had here, I have found that the optics are very good right out of the box and I now don't plan to having the mirror re-figured. The views are extremely sharp on the Moon and Saturn (the only planetary objects I have looked at with this scope thus far. Lots and lots of tiny craters and details on the moon, and Saturn looks like a very sharp 3D model hanging there. The crayford focuser is smooth, and I actually like the red-dot finder. I find it easier to point the scope to the approximate location in the sky where some object is located with the red-dot than with an optical finder. Both axes move smoothly. This scope is the best newtonian Dobsonian I have used or seen. Its collapsible truss tube makes it transportable - even in a Subaru! The rocker box mount is good as dobs go! I love the optics. You can lose the red dot finder and put a counterweight on the bottom to correctly offset any heavy eyepieces or Telrad you might add on later. Other than that... I saw the Whale galaxy, the Veil nebulae and many other deep sky jewells that are out of reach of many other scopes. Aperture IS Everything! |

Received this scope within just a few days of ordering it with the free UPS ground shipping. I'd read up on several reviews in Astromart, other web addresses upon doing a product search for reviews. Many great things mentioned about the scope specific to viewing and in general with its construction, etc. but a few wishes specified that could only add to the scopes appeal. I'm happy to mention that most concerns that I'd read about when the scope was first being reviwed have been addressed by MEADE. These to include: 1-Rubber stops on bottom of primary bucket so that, stock or with addition of Bobs Knobs, the OTA doesn't rest on the knobs that you collimate the scope with. 2-Altitude tension adjust knob on the box. 3-Scope shipped in such a manner as the plastic primary mirror cover packed outside the primary bucket and the bucket came shipped sealed in plastic, my mirror looked pri... |
