Piers & Observatories

Piers & Observatories

Nothing beats the rock solid stability of a pier-mounted telescope, except perhaps your own observatory!  These types of permanent or semi-permanent installations will provide the ultimate in stability and equipment protection.

Electro-mechanical piers are designed for the observer who wishes to raise and lower the pier by a push of a button.  These devices are able to lift a wide variety of weight to various elevations, and they can be controlled through a laptop computer or even from a remote location.  Available in many custom heights, permanent piers are manufactured to safely carry the telescope in all orientations, and they are specifically designed for different payloads.  They are equally at home in a professional observatory or in an amateur's backyard.  Piers are meant to be durable and to withstand vibration.  They offer a solid, permanent base for your observing platform while being fully adjustable for precision polar alignment.  Some are suited for outdoor applications.

Telescope piers are custom designed to specific heights and payloads.  Certain models have motorized systems to raise and lower the telescope height, and some are completely weather resistant.  Most portable pier styles can be adapted to permanent status.  Both have the capacity to become one of the favored ways of mounting your telescope.

A permanent home for your telescope means a huge reduction in set-up time, which translates to more time at the eyepiece or camera.  You also have the possibility of remote observations and imaging.

We are very pleased to offer both permanent and portable observatory domes.  These personal and professional observatories are designed for strength, appearance, and long life.  All electronic components are hand-built by skilled and experienced staff.  Portable dome options are meant to travel from one home or location to another, but perhaps not out to your local star party.  These affordable options shelter you from winds and neighbors' porch lights.  No more need to haul your equipment out, set it up, and then break it down and haul it back inside when you're finished.  These domes are more of a do-it-yourself set up than permanent, company installed options.  There are also rolling roof options that are easily put together on your own, which are highly economical choices for converting existing structures into observatories.
