Every bit as important as the telescope optical tube assembly (OTA) is
the correct telescope mount. If you are considering purchasing a new
telescope or buying a new telescope mount, let OPT help you decide what
telescope mount right for you. There are three basic designs: the Equatorial
Telescope Mount, the Alt-azimuth
Telescope Mount and the Dobsonian telescope mount. Let's talk
briefly about them...
The equatorial
telescope mount is aligned to the pole and uses a series of gears
and slow motion cables to track objects in right ascension and
declination - as well as manual setting circles for locating objects.
Employing a counterbalance, the EQ telescope
mount design is favored for heavier telescopes and those interested
in astrophotography - allowing the user to add optional drive units and
digital setting circles - or to purchase it as a computer-controlled ("GoTo") equatorial telescope
mount. The alt-az
telescope mount moves left to right and up and down and has the
option to lock the telescope mount position. The alt-azimuth
telescope mount design is generally used with smaller telescopes,
especially refractors and mak-cas designs - and can also be
computer-assisted. They also make excellent beginner telescope mounts!
For large aperture Newtonian reflectors, you may be interested in the
economical, easy-to-use Dobsonian telescope. Designed like a lazy susan,
the telescope body rests in a cradle and moves freely in any direction -
relying on balance to hold position. With fewer moving parts and a
simplistic, well-crafted design, the Dobsonian telescope mount design is
also highly recommended as a beginner telescopes. With the
exception of the Dobsonian telescope, all telescope mounts require
optical tube connecting plates or telescope tube rings; and a telescope
tripod or a telescope pier to complete your set up.

Tripods, Tabletop Tripods and Telescope
Mounting Piers by quality manufacturers such as Losmandy,
