SCAE Event Info |
In 2005, Oceanside Photo and Telescope sponsored the First Annual Southern California Astronomy Expo... and the SCAE was born. Every summer, beautiful North San Diego County (home of OPT) is the scene of two Saturday events filled with seminars by leading professional and amateur astronomers. Here you'll find displays by a wide variety of the industry's best manufacturers of astronomical equipment and special sales on OPT's own huge inventory. What's more, OPT donates, sponsors and arranges a huge (and very popular!) giveaway that includes telescopes, imaging cameras, eyepieces, software, and more... Over $10,000 in merchandise! At the end of it all... The evening Star Party.
Why don't you join us for a few moments... Relax and enjoy! Step inside and that a look at SCAE 2005. David Levy's talks were inspirational, personal, and funny, and he stayed long after his portion of the program was over to speak to attendees and sign autographs. In less than half an hour, 25 large Killer Pizzas from Mars and everyone enjoyed gifts that Gary Palmer, our guest speaker on H-Alpha viewing and imaging, bestowed upon them before his talk began. You'll see Mike Weasner and hundreds of people talking face-to-face with a host of representatives from superb companies like ATS Piers, Astrodon, Borg/Hutech, Celestron, Coronado, Discovery, Denkmeier, JMI, Meade, Mitty, SBIG, Stellarvue, Takahashi, Tele Vue, Vixen, Yankee Robotics, William Optics, and MaxFactory. We really had a great time!
But the fun didn't stop there... Come along and join us at SCAE 2006! We were enormously pleased to host exciting and educational talks on a variety of astronomy topics at the 2nd Annual Southern California Astronomy Expo Seminar. Our line-up for the day featured both amateur and professional astronomers, including John Hoot, Gary Palmer, Dan Phillips, Michele Thaller and Dennis Mammana. If you wanted to learn about exoplanets, the aurora borealis, CCD imaging, or our closest star, it was all there for you! Approximately 500 people were on hand throughout the day to talk face-to-face with a multitude of representatives from superb companies like Astro Runner, ATS Piers, Borg/Hutech, Canon, Celestron, Coronado, CosmoComfort, Denkmeier, Finger Lake Instrumentation (FLI), JMI, Meade, Mitty, Nikon, Orion, Pentax, SBIG, Software Bisque, StarChaserz, Stellarvue, Takahashi, Tele Vue, Vixen, William Optics, and Yankee Robotics. The free pizza lunch was gone in a flash...there were thirty large pizzas there one minute, and they were gone the next. The Giveaway Raffle was amazing! Ben Hauck called out a winning number forty-eight times, for a total retail value of over $13,000! Another great year...
And the SCAE 2007 was just as great! The speaker line-up featured both amateur and professional astronomers and photographers, including: Dr. Kevin Grazier, Tony Hallas, Dennis Mammana, Gary Palmer and John C. Smith, Jr. We learned about the science of science fiction, photographing the night sky, the history and future of astrophotography, and exploring our closest star in astounding detail! We also had an Astro Shootout Photo Contest and a Telescope Demonstration Overview. The OPT parking lot became a hive of activity as the much-awaited SCAE Telescope Demonstration Convention got under way. Approximately 800 people were on hand throughout the day to talk face-to-face with a multitude of representatives from superb companies like ADM, Apogee, Astrodon, Astronomy Magazine, Canon, Celestron, Chronos, Coronado, Astro Hutech, Imaging Source, Maxfactory, Meade, Pentax, QSI Imaging, SBIG, Stellarvue, Takahashi, Tele Vue, Vixen, William Optics, and Yankee Robotics. Short talks by various manufacturer representatives took place in the OPT Underground Gallery throughout the day, interrupted only by a free pizza lunch for the masses at 2:00pm. Forty large pizzas, as well as chips, cookies, and drinks, were set out and a line promptly formed. Let’s just say the amount of pizzas (especially pepperoni!) and people increase each year! Not only that... but prizes... 50 of them over $20,000 was given away at SCAE 07!
